Sending a drawing to someone without CAD
The person who has to approve your drawing does not have AutoCAD and never will: a client, a building manager, a printer, a colleague in accounts. They need one file they can open, and that file is a PDF. The awkward part is that the usual route to a PDF runs through the software you are trying to avoid.
Export keeps the geometry as vectors, so lines stay clean when the recipient zooms in or prints at A3, and the sheet is laid out on A4 in landscape or portrait to match the drawing's proportions. What gets exported is exactly the view on screen, so press 'Fit to screen' for the whole sheet, or zoom into one detail if that is all you want to send. Layers you switch off stay out of the PDF, which is the quickest way to strip dimension text or hatching from a print.
Drawings are usually light-on-black on screen and that is unreadable on paper, so everything is drawn black on white in the PDF. Text keeps its own alphabet because a font is embedded to match the characters the drawing actually uses; Arabic and Indic scripts are the exception, as the letters come out unjoined. Very complex block references can occasionally lose a piece in the PDF; when that matters, export a PNG instead, which is a picture of the screen and always matches.

Frequently asked questions
- Is the PDF vector or a picture?
- Vector. Lines stay crisp when you zoom in or print at A3, unlike a PNG export.
- What does it print on paper?
- Drawings are usually white-on-black on screen. The PDF is drawn black on white paper so it is readable when printed.
- Which part of the drawing is exported?
- Exactly what you see. Press 'Fit to screen' first if you want the whole drawing, or zoom into a detail to export just that.
- Will Korean, Japanese or Cyrillic text survive?
- Yes. A font matching the characters in the drawing is embedded in the PDF. Arabic and Devanagari are the exception: the letters are drawn unjoined.
- Can I export the 3D view?
- No. PDF and PNG export the 2D drawing; the 3D view is for looking at the model on screen.
