Clearing the location out before you post
Photos for a classified ad, holiday pictures for a blog, a screenshot of a receipt sent to a colleague: most of them carry the coordinates of wherever the shutter was pressed. Some sites remove that for you, plenty do not, and a file attached to an email or sent through a chat app goes out exactly as it came off the phone. This tool cuts the GPS position, the camera model, the timestamps and the rest of the metadata out and hands back a clean copy.
For JPG and PNG there is no loss of quality whatsoever. The image data is copied across untouched and only the metadata segments are cut away, so the pixels in the result are byte for byte identical to the original. What goes is EXIF, GPS, XMP, IPTC and any comment left in the file. The ICC colour profile is kept by default, because removing it can leave photos shot in a wide colour space looking washed out, but it does name your device as well, so clear the checkbox if you want nothing identifying left at all.
Formats other than JPG and PNG, such as WebP or an iPhone's HEIC, work differently: the picture is redrawn and saved as a PNG, which certainly removes the metadata but does re-encode the image. You can drop in a whole batch and take the results as a ZIP. Your originals are never modified, a new file is written alongside them, so keep the original if the shooting date might matter to you later. Frequently asked questions
- Does it degrade the image?
- Not for JPG or PNG. Only the metadata segments are cut out; the image data is copied across untouched, so the pixels are identical to the original. Other formats are re-saved as PNG.
- What exactly is removed?
- EXIF, GPS, XMP, IPTC and comments. The ICC colour profile is kept by default because removing it can shift colours, but it also names your device, so uncheck the box if you want full anonymity.
- Can I undo it?
- No. The cleaned file is saved as a new copy and your original is left alone, so keep that original if you might need the data back.
