Putting a Word document on the web
A policy, a manual or an annual report was written in Word and now has to live on a site or an intranet. Copying and pasting out of Word drags in a mountain of inline styling that fights whatever the site already uses, and cleaning it up by hand takes longer than rewriting the page.
The output is a single .html file: headings, emphasis and real tables, list items as paragraphs with their marker typed in, the images embedded and the stylesheet written inside the file so it looks the same wherever it is opened. Text is escaped rather than interpreted and the file forbids scripts, so nothing in the document can run when the page is opened.
Fonts, colours, alignment and spacing are carried over as inline styles, and tables keep their column widths, borders and shading. That keeps the document's look, so for bare markup to drop into a site with its own stylesheet, Word to Markdown is the better start. Footnotes move to the end, and headers and footers are left out. Nothing is uploaded.
