Word to Markdown

Convert Word headings, lists, tables, links, images and footnotes into Markdown. Tables with merged cells are written as HTML tables.

This tool does not upload your files. Close the tab and nothing is left behind.

Moving Word documents into plain text workflows

Documentation that lives in Word is hard to review and impossible to diff. Once a team moves to a wiki, a static site or a repository, every existing .docx has to become Markdown before it can be committed, and retyping a long specification by hand is not realistic.

Headings, ordered and unordered lists, bold, italic, links and images all convert. Images come through inline as base64 data, which keeps the file self-contained but can make it many times larger than the text alone, so strip them out if you only wanted the words. Tables become Markdown tables, and one with merged cells is written as an HTML table instead so the merges survive.

Footnotes become n) marks with the note text gathered at the end, while headers and footers are left behind. When the look of the tables matters more than the Markdown, Word to HTML keeps their widths, borders and shading. Several files can be dropped in at once and each one is converted separately, all of it inside your browser.
