The password you have but keep retyping

Banks, insurers and card issuers routinely send statements encrypted with your date of birth or the last digits of an ID number. It is sensible protection in transit and a nuisance afterwards, when every single open needs the same string typed again and no local search tool can look inside. It also gets in the way when the file has to be merged, printed in batch or handed to an accountant.

You need the working password to use this, and entering it produces a copy of the same document with the encryption removed. Nothing is cracked or guessed here; if the password is wrong the file simply will not open, and no amount of retrying changes that. Pages are copied across untouched, so the unlocked version looks exactly like the original.

That copy is readable by anyone who gets hold of it, which is worth remembering before it lands in a synced folder or a shared drive. If you want protection on your own terms instead, pdf-protect can set a password you actually control. The password you type stays in this browser tab and the file is never uploaded.
